The 9 Days Northern Circuit Route is the ultimate Kilimanjaro adventure for trekkers seeking an extended, scenic, and less crowded path to the summit. Known for its unmatched acclimatization and panoramic views, this route circles around the northern slopes of the mountain, offering diverse landscapes and a 95% summit success rate.
Starting from Lemosho Gate, this longer itinerary provides additional acclimatization time compared to the 8-day version, making it ideal for trekkers who prefer a relaxed pace and higher chances of reaching Uhuru Peak safely. You’ll pass through lush rainforest, alpine desert, and icy glaciers, experiencing the full majesty of Kilimanjaro’s ecosystems while enjoying solitude and stunning scenery.
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), a guide will transfer you to your hotel in Moshi. After check-in, your mountain crew will meet you for a full climb briefing, equipment check, and health assessment. This evening is for rest and final preparations before the journey begins.
Begin your adventure with a drive to Lemosho Gate. After registration with park authorities, trek through the lush rainforest filled with monkeys and birds. The trail gradually ascends to Mti Mkubwa, meaning “Big Tree Camp,” where you’ll have dinner and overnight stay.
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours | Distance: 7 km | Habitat: Rainforest
After breakfast, continue trekking through the forest, which soon opens into moorland filled with giant heathers and volcanic rock formations. You’ll ascend to the Shira Ridge and reach the Shira Plateau, one of the most beautiful camp zones on Kilimanjaro.
Trekking Time: 5–6 hours | Distance: 8 km
A short, gentle hike across the plateau allows your body to acclimatize. You’ll enjoy incredible views of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro’s peaks. Spend the afternoon exploring the surroundings and resting before dinner at Shira 2 Camp.
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours | Distance: 6 km
Today’s trek follows the “hike high, sleep low” principle. You’ll ascend to Lava Tower for acclimatization before descending to Moir Hut, located in a quiet valley below the Lent Hills. The scenery changes dramatically as you enter the alpine desert zone.
Trekking Time: 6–7 hours | Distance: 10 km
A challenging but rewarding day as you climb out of Moir Valley and traverse the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro. This lesser-known path offers magnificent views of Kenya and the vast plains below. You’ll arrive at Buffalo Camp for dinner and rest.
Trekking Time: 6–7 hours | Distance: 12 km
The trail continues eastward with rolling terrain and incredible landscapes. The gradual ascent and descent across small ridges make this day perfect for acclimatization. Overnight at Third Cave Camp under a blanket of stars.
Trekking Time: 5–6 hours | Distance: 10 km
Continue ascending steadily to School Hut, your final camp before summit day. The terrain becomes more barren and windswept. Early dinner and rest are essential, as you’ll begin your summit push before midnight.
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours | Distance: 5 km
Wake around 11:30 PM and start the final ascent to the summit under a canopy of stars. The climb to Gilman’s Point (5,681m) is steep and challenging. From there, follow the crater rim to Uhuru Peak — the highest point in Africa.
After celebrating your achievement and taking photos, begin your descent via the Mweka Route to Mweka Camp for a well-deserved rest.
Trekking Time: 12–15 hours | Distance: 18 km
Enjoy your last morning on the mountain with an easy descent through the lush rainforest. At Mweka Gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate and meet your transfer back to Moshi for a hot shower and relaxation.
Trekking Time: 3–4 hours | Distance: 10 km
The 9-day itinerary provides even more time for acclimatization than the 8-day version, giving trekkers the best possible chance of reaching the summit safely and comfortably.
The route circles around the northern face of Kilimanjaro, offering unobstructed views toward Kenya and the Amboseli plains — a perspective not available on other routes.
The Northern Circuit remains one of the quietest trails on Kilimanjaro. It’s perfect for trekkers seeking solitude, peace, and an authentic wilderness experience.

The best months for trekking are **June to October** and **January to March**, when the weather is dry, skies are clear, and visibility is at its best. These periods also provide excellent conditions for photography and summit attempts.
The Northern Circuit is classified as a **moderate-to-difficult** route. While the long itinerary allows gradual acclimatization, trekkers should have good fitness and endurance. Regular hiking, cardiovascular training, and altitude preparation are recommended at least two months before the climb.
