Distance: ~6 km | Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation: 3,950m to 3,995m

Distance: ~5 km | Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Around midnight, the summit attempt begins. You’ll trek slowly through freezing temperatures and thin air toward Stella Point (5,756m) before reaching Uhuru Peak — Africa’s highest point. Enjoy the sunrise and panoramic views of glaciers before descending to Mweka Camp via Barafu.

Distance: ~17 km | Hiking Time: 10–14 hours (summit & descent)

Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Return to Moshi

Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m

Distance: ~10 km | Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

Difficulty and Acclimatization

The Umbwe Route is steep and offers little time for acclimatization compared to other routes like Machame or Lemosho. This makes it more suitable for experienced climbers or those who have prior high-altitude trekking experience.

Best Time to Climb Umbwe Route

  • Dry Season (June–October): Best weather and trail conditions.
  • Short Dry Season (January–March): Fewer crowds, clear skies, moderate temperatures.

Tips for Success on Umbwe Route

  • Train for endurance and strength several weeks before your climb.
  • Stay hydrated and move slowly to prevent altitude sickness.
  • Use trekking poles for support during steep sections.
  • Bring high-quality waterproof boots and layered clothing.
  • Climb with a licensed and experienced Kilimanjaro operator.
